After the photo shoot, there was over 400 pictures. A lot of them turned out really nice and I plan on maybe doing a collection with them. I wanted to make like a pin up poster. I tried to apply things to photo shop to make a pin up design but photo shop constantly was shutting down on me and telling me I was using too much RAM. I had to start over on photo shop multiply times. I definitely need more experience with photo shop but this project was a step in the door with photo shop. So I had to change my idea. After analyzing some of Sigmar Polke's works, I decided to go for a more modern day kind of look. His works look almost pix-elated and cartoon like. They are more in the moment or un-staged compared to the traditional pin up posters that are largely staged.

I almost left my piece at this step. But after analyzing it, it did not give off the right impression. Roller derby has boosted my self esteem and confidence. So the less colored picture was not what I wanted. I added on a large amount of saturation to it and I liked how it turned out. The vibrancy gives off and exciting vibe. It also helped with the almost pixel-ed look of Sigmar Polke. It gives it a more lively look and cartooned. I think it largely associates with roller derby with the large saturation added on. I believe a large amount of pin up pictures are very colorful and vibrate. I wanted to connect this piece to the traditional pin up pictures but, with a modern day vibe. Roller derby is a very new sport so, I wanted to give it a "new" modern look as well. WFTDA is like the NFL of roller derby and it is only 10 years old. |
I tried to do a solid color background at first. It did not bring out the roller derby concept. It was bland and boring. The flowers in the back bring me as the roller derby girl out more and adds onto the excitement of the piece. It brings out more of Sigmar's pieces as well with the more real life / in the moment type of works. The plain background was going towards the connection to the traditional pin up pictures. But the flowers in the back was, for sure, a better decision for the meaning of this piece. It gave a modern day look and gave more play to the saturation.
Reflection: For the most part, I like the way I created this piece. I want to further explore photo shop. I hope to use the rest of the photo shoot pictures and do a pin-up/roller derby girl collection. Sigmar Polke's works influenced me into the more pixel and saturated look the final piece has. Photoshop is a complex website that I want to look more into. It was definitely a large amount of just trying and seeing how it looked and deleting and remaking. Wanting to pursue a career in graphic design, this project was exciting to do. I like to paint but, this was probably my favorite project. The combination of photography and design was really exciting and it is definitely what I want to go into. |
