Process :
When this project was introduced, I was a little lost. I have never thought much about architecture. There were building I definitely appreciate and admire in Milwaukee but, I have never thought of them in an architecture standpoint. The thing that stands out most to me in Milwaukee is the Mitchell Park Conservatory or "DOMES". There has been a lot of talk about the Domes lately too, due to the maintenance that needs to be done and there temporary shut down. I have gone to the Domes as a child and love them a lot. I researched the architect behind the Domes and that is Donald Grieb.

Mitchell Park Conservatory Domes.
http://archpaper.com/tag/donald-grieb/ On the right are my first planning sketches to cut my box. The little drawing on the side was me trying to decide how to create the Domes. My plan was to cut pieces of thin plastic and create the Domes by gluing them together. That did not work because I was not able to cut the pieces evenly and the hot glue just looked like a mess on it.
I bought most of my own supplies for this project. I am not good at sawing any thing. So I went to Hobby Lobby and bought small cut pieces of wood. I also found these ornament like clear globes to use for the Domes. I bought some small wooden circles because it reminded me of one of Donald Grieb's other works.
I wanted to focus on modernism so I used a lot of straight lines. Also, I enjoy small detail work so my piece is by no means a large piece. I kept it to a small scale.

I like the modernized look of the Domes. I don't think about architecture much but, I really enjoy modern type buildings. So, that is the theme I wanted my project to portray. I knew I wanted to incorporate the Domes so for my board I wanted to make the light void so they could focus on the domes. It will enhance the Domes to make them the main piece.
On the left is my final planning sketch for my box. It consisted of four lines going all the way through, creating two voids. I decided to make one of the three Domes larger than the other two because one of the Domes is considered the main one or the show Dome. I wanted to place the main one directly over the larger void to reflect the light through it and the smaller two directly next to the smaller void. The Domes give off these blue tint to them because of the reflection off of the sky. I tried to recreate that by putting a blue plastic on the bottom of the board but, the blue tint was not strong enough to give off a blue tone to I discarded that idea. I took it off after I put it on the light box with everything on it. And the natural light without the blue looked way better. Which techinally the DOMES are not blue, it is just the reflection of the ky so, to connect it I left it with natural light for the domes to just reflect off of it's surroundings.
Reflection:
This project was a little out of my artistic comfort zone. I am primarily a 2D artist. It was nice look at things from an architecture stand point. It is different to put more focus into buildings and the way sky lines are constructed. I think my piece was a large success. I succeeded in making a modernistic landscape and you can see the connection to Donald Grieb and his historic Milwaukee landmark. This project was just another test of my 3D sculpture like skills. Since my comfort zone for art is 2D art it was another project that was a little challenging. On top of it being a sculpture, it was architechture. Which is totally not in my mind. It is something I never ever thought about before. It did help that I picked a historic, well known, Milwaukee landmark. Milwaukee is something I care about a lot and so I cared about making this project look good. Similar to the Milwaukee flag project. As long as I make a project connective to me, I will try my hardest to make it a quality piece. |
